Auf Wiedersehen 2009

And that about sums it all up for me!

As for fitness and running, here are my stats for this past year, a year that brought much sorrow to our family and this nation in general. The only thing that made this year less horrible than it could have been was the fact that we voted in the right man on November 4th, 2008. The alternative is a possibility I don’t want to imagine…

Total Distance: 2669.6 miles
Total Time: 463:28:41 min
Run Distance: 2001.4 miles
Run Time: 253:12:41 min
Walk Distance: 668.2 miles
Walk Time: 210:16:00 min

Best running month: 201.5 miles (March)

Worst running month: 146.3 miles (October! what a surprise…)

Average speed: 7:37 min/miles

Strength & Endurance: 62 hours

Weight Training: 31:25 hours

Yoga: 55.50 hours

As for the new year and new decade I vow to stay as dedicated to running and working out as I have been for the past 10 years. What can I say, it gets me through the days, the good and the not so good (I took a vow a long time ago never to have a bad day again and I am sticking to it)!

HAPPY NEW DECADE

Everyone wakes up on New Years Day with the same thoughts: this year will be the year I will… (fill in the blank)! In order to stick with your running goals sign up for a race early in the year. It does not have to be a marathon, just a distance that you need to train for. A training schedule within the first few months of the new year will help you get used to a regular training plan and sticking with a routine!

Silent Night(s)

HappyHolidays

It has been quiet around here these last couple of weeks and it might be time to catch up a little.

David and I embarked on a flying visit up north to the Bay Area just before Christmas, where David had some business to attend to. Before Adrienne’s funeral in early October we had not been back up there for several years and while staying with good friends and visiting old stomping grounds we realized how much we actually miss it. There is just a certain vibe , an energy that you don’t find anywhere else. As luck would have it we had another opportunity to go back up there and we took it. While David had to take care of business we also had plenty of time to have fun with our friends,

Chris&Greta

explore new neighborhoods – who would have thought that downtown Campbell could be this nice AND have a Farmer’s Market on Sunday? – and run the lovely Los Gatos Creek Trail.

We also visited Adrienne’s grave which looked so different grassed over and without the funeral set up. I could not help but think that we were standing there a week from the day she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma 13 years ago. That Christmas 1996 we took the kids to Lake Tahoe, where we had rented a condo with friends. What promised to be a fun ski vacation in a wintry mountain resort turned into the worst trip of my life. The powdery snowfall of the first two spectacular days turned into record rain and Adrienne seemed to display more and more symptoms of her illness as the days wore on. Maybe it was the fact that we now knew what ailed her, that we had to face the seriousness of her illness, that we could no longer escape the fact that our family had been touched by childhood cancer. She had not been well for quite some time but before she was diagnosed we could brush it off to childhood growth spurts, allergies, a bad cold. Now every ache, every untouched meal, the endless fatigue, just reminded us of the unforgiving reality we were facing. Even Adrienne, who was only 9 at the time had lost her innocence and one night asked me if she was going to die. I assured her that although we were all going to pass on one day chances were very high that she would beat her lymphoma and live a long and prosperous life. And it was not lie told by a concerned parent who does not want to tell the brutal truth to a child. Back then we truly believed she would beat this, after all, her young age and access to one of the best medical facilities and the leading expert in childhood lymphoma were all in her favor. We were so hopeful then and had no idea what lay ahead!

I thought about that fateful Tahoe “vacation”, the one we had to eventually cut short (thank goodness!!!) as the record rainfall turned into record flooding (I could not wait to get home!), and that it was really an omen of things to come, the 13 years that followed, the struggles, the hopefulness, the set backs, the suffering, and that our family was never going to be the same.

From the Bay Area we went to Santa Barbara for a couple of days and attended Susan’s funeral. A service as beautiful as it can be. A lot of my former colleagues were present and a few of them spoke. While they were remembering Susan’s spirit I felt myself nodding in agreement countless times. We all knew what the world had lost and how much we would miss our friend. She was truly one of a kind and I cherish every memory. It is not often you can find a person who really enjoys working side by side with his or her supervisor and I realize how lucky I was and I am glad I realized it while it was happening. I always treasured the days I could work in direct contact with Susan, whether it was a problem that needed to be solved, covering the registration desk at National Sessions, attending meetings, or just catching up on tasks and completed projects, I looked forward to seeing her every single day.

After almost a week on the road I was happy to be home again. I always enjoy road trips, especially road trips that can be combined with visiting good friends, but there is nothing more delicious than sleeping in your own bed again after so many days away from your duvet (although Greta’s bed is pretty heavenly, I must say!). And the comforts of home can not be forgotten as well. As much as I love my friends, I also love being home!

Christmas Eve David, a friend of mine, Barbara’s friend, and I went to our local Rescue Mission and helped out serving Holiday meals to the less fortunate. It was a stark reminder of how blessed we really are and that we have absolutely nothing to complain about. Even with all of our struggles this past year we have yet to miss a hot meal! There at the Mission we met the most gracious and grateful people you could meet, people who have nothing, people who live in tents and don’t know where their next meal comes from, families with children of all ages, children that had a sparkle in their eyes when they each got a present from the toy drive. We have so much! A roof over our heads, clean sheets to crawl under, freshly laundered clothes to wear, a full fridge, the ability to buy more food when we run out (as if!), really, what else do we really need? And in that spirit David and I changed our plans for Christmas Night, lit a fire, had egg bagels and Pecan Pie and just enjoyed being cozy at home.

Happy Holidays!

Today’s Running Tip: Running while traveling!

Since running is a fairly low maintenance exercise you don’t have to stop your routine while on the road. Just pack your running shoes, enough clothing for the days you are traveling (pack warm if you will be in cold climates!). It is a great way to explore the neighborhood and find new running routes. If you are staying with friends ask them about a near by trail that is frequented by walkers and runners. If you are staying in a hotel ask the concierge who usually has maps of local running routes that are save!

Susan W. Cortez

SusanJuly04

Summer Session, Alexandria, VA, July 2004

Yesterday, while working in my volunteer job I received one of the most shocking emails of the year: my friend Susan Cortez had passed away over the weekend. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around this. Susan was my supervisor for almost eight years at Fielding, the entire time I worked there, until she retired in September of 2007, five months before I resigned. She was a huge part of my life for all those years and definitely one of the reasons I loved my job as much as I did. I wish everyone could have a supervisor like her! She led a huge department with many different characters that displayed a vast variety of strengths and weaknesses, something most of us would certainly be overwhelmed by. Not Susan! She had an almost uncanny ability to gage people and play to their strengths, always giving someone a chance and keeping everyone that worked in her office of Academic Resources in line. We did not always see eye to eye for sure but we a had a deep mutual respect for each other. She managed our department like the trooper she was and I will never forget how she helped me through one of the toughest days of my life.

Susan did not have an easy life, and even the strong amongst us might have broken down under the weight she carried on her small shoulders. I often wondered how she made it through some of the times she had been through and was awed by her tenacity. If I can live through just half the challenges she had faced I can live through anything. By the time she retired in late 2007 she had been at Fielding for over 25 years. I dreaded the day that was her last because I knew it would never be the same without her, without passing by her office every morning to drink my tea and have a quick chat, without her leadership, without her dedication to the school, faculty, students, and her staff.

Susan was also a very talented artist and loved nothing more than drawing and digging around in her garden. Her tomatoes are unforgettable to this day and she always dreamed of having a studio room just for herself where she could draw uninterrupted. Fielding had already lost one of the most dedicated employees when she left but now the world has lost one of the most loving and compassionate human beings you could ever meet. I hope she will find the peace that she never found in life and I will forever miss being her “handler”!

Fascinating

This past week I watched the Barbara Walter’s 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009 Special… She had her usual annual headliners: Lady Gaga, whom she asked if she has had sexual relationships with women, Adam Lambert, whom she asked about his homosexuality. Detect a theme here? But then I always forget that she has to cater to an sex obsessed American public. She also interviewed Jenny Sanford, whose interview was as dry as a piece of six week old toast. I guess in this age of political sex scandals it is indeed fascinating that Jenny actually packed up and left the Governor’s mansion instead of standing right next to her husband while he admitted publicly to his long time affair with his Argentinean girlfriend.

(Glenn Beck made it onto her list as well, but I cannot go there!)

But what was most fascinating about Walter’s Special was the fact that both Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin made her list. To even attempt to put these two women in the same category is something that is lost on me.

On one hand, our First Lady:

MichelleObama

Photo: Annie Leibowitz

Let’s see! Here we have a descendant of slaves who grew up on the south side of Chicago. Michelle graduated from both Princeton University and then went on to Harvard Law School where she earned her Juris Doctor in 1988. She met her husband, our 44th President(!!!), at a Chicago law firm where she worked in intellectual property. She later served as Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago before working for the University of Chicago Hospitals, first as executive director for community affairs and later as Vice President for Community and External Affairs.

While her husband pursued his political career, first in Springfield, Illinois as a State Senator and then Washington, D.C., as a United States Senator before embarking on his Presidential campaign, Michelle has been raising two daughters, Malia, who was born four years after she married Barack Obama, and Sasha, who was born three years later. Both girls have been out of the spotlight and are rarely seen in public.

Whenever she appears in public our First Lady is nothing but poised, answering questions intelligently and with honesty, showing humility and elegance rarely seen in this day and age of outrageousness. An example of a highly educated woman who is committed to her husband, her daughters, and her husband’s ambitions. We learned that whenever she gave a speech during her husband’s campaign she wrote it herself, never letting the ugly side of politics get the better of her.

Fortunately for us, as a nation, she became our First Lady and we can be assured that she will represent us with the same dignity she shows our country whenever she appears in public. Like her husband she is loved and admired around the globe, which was unthinkable for an American President not too long ago.

On the other hand, Sarah Palin:

SrahPalin

Born in Idaho and raised in Alaska, she later attended Hawaii Pacific University for one semester before transferring to North Idaho College for two semesters. Then she went on to win the Miss Wasilla pageant and finished third in the Miss Alaska pageant when she received the “Miss Congeniality” award and a college scholarship. She used this scholarship to attend the University of Idaho for two semesters, Matanuska-Susitna College (WTH??? Honestly!!!) for one semester and finally went back to the University of Idaho to complete her Bachelor’s degree in communication. Are you dizzy yet? Just keeping track of her college years is hard work and it’s only a sign of things to come.

She eloped with her then boyfriend and gave birth to her first of five children eight months later…

From 1992 to 1996 Palin was a member of the Wasilla city council before being elected as mayor of Wasilla in 1996. She became chairman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission after an unsuccessful run for Lieutenant Governor, but quit after just one year. In 2006 she became the first female governor of Alaska. After announcing that she was not running for reelection she resigned from her position 18 months before her first term was up.

While she pursued her political ambitions in Alaska and later nation wide, something we can thank John McCain for, she raised five children, whom she thrust into the spotlight at any opportunity she saw to help advance her cause. Using them without many scruples to portray the image of wholesome family values. Even her daughter’s then boyfriend had to stand in as pseudo fiancee once the public became aware of the fact the Palin theory of abstinence apparently does not work so well in her own home. And we all know how that strategy ended.

Whenever she appears in public she has been nothing but an embarrassment to herself and her family, and this nation in general, “answering” questions by regurgitating right wing talking points, if at all, showing anything but humility. When asked if she ever hesitated to accept the nomination for the second highest office in this country, if only for a moment, she answered clearly and without hesitation “No!”. The only clear answer she has ever given. A shining example of this country’s need for education reform, who is committed to no one but herself. Her peak moment was without doubt her speech at the Republican Convention, written by former Bush speech writer Matthew Scully. After that it went all down hill and politics not only got the better but also the worst of her.

Unfortunately, thanks to John McCain, the public continues to be subjected to this nimwit. She sure is a gift that keeps on giving, forcing herself into the public eye at every opportunity. Her recently released book speaks for itself (and goes to show that ANYone can consider themselves an author). You could blame the ghost writer but then you have to keep in mind that even the best writer can only do so much with the subject at hand, who, as we found out, cannot recall a single publication she reads and does not believe that Africa is a continent. A fine representation of everything that is right wing in America indeed! Every so often I allow myself to go to that dark place in my imagination where she would be Vice President. Flying around the world, visiting foreign countries and meeting with their leaders, continuing the world wide mockery this country’s leadership had been for the longest eight years in the history of America.

I shudder at the thought and yet, Barbara Walters apparently feels that Sarah Palin deserves to be put into the same category as Michelle Obama. As unbelievable as that might seem, you could witness it on ABC and I did. The irony was not lost on me and I started to wonder who actually makes the decision as to who the Most Fascination People of the Year are? I am assuming it is a committee, a committee that finds sex, scandal, and basic lack of intellect as fascinating as brains and sophistication. My only hope is that the majority that appreciates the latter will continue to prevail as the opposite would be to dire to comprehend. As a country we should take pride in those amongst us who are smarter than us, who have bright ideas, who lead with shining example. Not those who wink during Presidential debates and cannot recall the last newspaper they read.

Let’s hope this country continues in the right direction and the majority of voters are intelligent enough to make the right choices. We have all experienced what can happen if they don’t.

Today’s Running Tip: Take a Deep Breath!

Running is generally a great way to release stress and regroup. But if you feel constantly stressed out be sure take a few minutes to calm yourself down before heading out on a run. Close your eyes and take deep, cleansing breaths. Otherwise you risk injury due to distractions and tension.
