Got Him!

Unless you are living under a rock you probably know that this past Sunday night our President informed the nation that Osama Bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks had been killed by US Navy Seals in a raid on his compound in the city of Abbottabad, just over an hour’s drive from Pakistan’s capital.

I have to admit that when I read on Twitter that President Obama  was about to address the nation on a national security issue I immediately thought that Muammar Gaddafi had been killed. Bin Laden never crossed my mind. After all the man had been on the run for over a decade and many thought that he had actually already died in a cave somewhere in the mountainous region on the Afghan-Pakistan boarder. Instead we found out that he had been hiding in more or less plain sight all along in an upper-middle-class neighborhood with many retired Pakistani army officers. The guy had neighbors! Think about that for a moment! I can’t help but wonder if they are like the neighbors you see interviewed when a serial killer is found and they look into the camera with total astonishment and tell us that the person “seemed like a perfectly nice guy. Quiet and keeping to himself. The only thing that was unusual was that he looked very thin, walked slowly and with the aid of a cane”.

Once the news of Bin Laden’s death was no longer just speculation social media exploded all over the internet. Twitter recorded up to 5000 tweets per second (as seen here), and people in NYC and Washington D.C. took to the streets and gathered at Ground Zero, Times Square and the White House. Some quietly with candles, but most of them chanting “USA! USA!”and waving American flags. It struck me how many young faces I saw, faces of that of my stepson, too young to have experienced the full emotional impact of that day almost a decade ago. And I have to admit that I felt torn about what I saw and not only because it reminded me of scenes from the streets of Middle Eastern countries where people who hate America and Americans burn the very same flag we so proudly wave.

Am I glad this man was finally found and brought to justice? Absolutely! And I am thankful for our Intelligence personnel, our brave men and women in uniform, and our Commander-in-Chief. I am grateful for the Navy Seals Team that put themselves in harms way by raiding Bin Laden’s compound and in the end killing the most wanted man in the world. And I am glad he was killed and buried at sea as to not make a shrine out of his burial side. But I don’t rejoice and I certainly do not feel that chanting is appropriate. After all, many around the world chanted after 9/11 and perspective is often clouded by personal experience and very much depends on which side of the fence you stand.

Over the last couple of days the blogosphere on the left and on the right has run ammock with opinions as to how one should react to the events on Sunday. There are those, like Glenn Greenwald, most notably of Bradley Manning fame, who see themselves as morally superior and believe we should be ashamed of our gloat at another man’s death. Greenwald posed the question of whether the US has the right to “just go into another country and murder a man?”. Well, Glenn, I hate to break it to you, but this was not “just another man” and before you keep riding on your high horse I would want to ask those who lost loved ones during the 9/11 attacks. Because even though we were all affected by what happened on that fateful September day, I personally did not lose a family member or friend and cannot even begin to imagine the sheer horror the families must have felt as the event unfolded.

I think of those who had loved ones working in the World Trade Center that day, the thousands of photos that lined the walls and trees of Lower Manhatten in the days that followed.

I think of those who received phone calls from their spouses who were on flight 77 that ultimately hit the Pentagon, and flight 93, the plane that passengers themselves took down in rural Pennsylvania.

I think of the brave New York fire fighters who ran into the burning buildings while everyone else tried to get away.

I think of the first responders, many of whom have died since then or are still suffering from the after effects.

I think of the nearly 3000 victims and the ones they left behind.

I think of them and realize in the end, their feelings are the ones that count the most.

On Sunday night various news casters interviewed a few of those family members and not one of them said that they were saddened by Osama Bin Laden’s death. Not a single one! And you know, neither am I. Believe me I would want for nothing more than for all citizens of this planet to just get along. But I am a realist and the fact that we cannot even get along with our fellow Americans should tell us how far we are from peace on earth.

You can argue that we brought the 9/1 attacks on ourself, that the last Administration was asleep at the wheel. And yes, there is certainly some truth to it, but in the end it was Bin Laden who cooked up and executed the plan that changed our country forever. I remember flying to Germany only three weeks after September 11 and how our nation had already changed at that point. The event altered our national security radically and the way people thought of each other. Everyone was suspicious and everyone, especially those of Middle Eastern decent, looked suspicious.

This man caused the harm he intended to cause and I can sleep just a bit better at night knowing he no longer walks amongst us. But you won’t see me cheering!

THIS!!!

To this Donald Trump says that he has accomplished something “very, very important!” And I must agree! No really! He has now proven to the entire world what a douche bag he is!

I hope he is proud of himself of not only humiliating the President of the United States but our country in general. A true patriot indeed!

Happy Wednesday!

Today’s Running Tip: Run the Honolulu Marathon!

Now is the perfect time to plan for a marathon in late fall, early winter. And what could be a more beautiful setting for a 26.2 mile race than Hawaii? This year the marathon will take place on Sunday, December 11th. Hawaiian residents can sign up early with a special Kama’aina rate until May 1st. You don’t even have to be born in Hawaii, just live there!

Feeling rather patriotic

THIS! Right here is why I volunteered for this man’s 2008 Presidential campaign and will do my part to help get him reelected in 2012!

I can sleep soundly at night knowing that Barack Obama is in charge of this great nation!

Today’s Running Tip: In for the long run!
Long runs are a great way to help you become a better runner even if you are not training for a (long distance) race. Long runs strengthen muscles, including the heart, improve running economy, increase the aerobic base and, last but not least, boost confidence!

Buffoonery

Really, Bill O’Reilly, this is how you conduct an interview with the sitting President of the United States?

And how much do the people that hate you bother you, Bill?

Today’s Running Tip: Improve your form!
Last month’s Runner’s World had an excellent article on full body workouts that help avoid injury and keep you (fair and) balanced! You can check it out here.

Kochs and Liars

Unless you live under a rock you have probably heard about the Koch Brothers. David and Charles Koch (btw, that name is pronounced /ˈkoʊk/! What? Coke? Co..?) are the billionaire principal owners of Koch Industries, the second largest privately held company in the United States with an estimated annual revenue of $98 billion. Koch Industries is only outdone by Cargill. Very nice! I am so happy for them and their luck to be born as trust fund babies! No really! Imagine what good all those dollars could do, just look at Bill Gates and his foundation. I mean some people really do know how to make a difference. Unfortunately that does not include Charles and David Koch.

According to Wikipidea, this is where they put all of their hard earned dollars, and I use the term “hard earned” liberally here:

“Koch Industries is known for its sponsorship of free market foundations and causes.[47]

From 2005 to 2008, Koch industries spent $5.7 million on political campaigns and $37 million on direct lobbying to support fossil fuel industries.[citation needed] Greenpeace says that between 1997 and 2008 Koch Industries donated nearly $48m to groups which doubt or oppose the currentconsensus on climate change.[48] According to Greenpeace, Koch Industries is the major source of funds of what Greenpeace calls “climate denial”.[49] Koch Industries and its subsidiaries spent more than $20 million on lobbying in 2008 and $12.3 million in 2009, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group.”

If you have not seen enough, here is another Website you might want to check out: http://climateprogress.org/2010/11/12/koch-industries-facts-a-new-website-about-2010s-dirtiest-opponent-of-clean-energy/

I know, right!? Now, I understand that there are those who deny everything from the all apparent climate change that is slowly but surely destroying our planet, to the fact that Reagan’s trickle down economic activities have been a total and utter failure. Good for them. I stick with science and facts, which tells me that 2010 was the hottest year in recorded history and one only has to look at the severity of winter storms and massive floods these past few years to understand that something scary os going on. And no, more snow does not mean it is not heating up here. In fact it is a sure sign of rising temperatures. As for Reaganomics, September 2008 should ring a bell when our financial system nearly collapsed and sent our free market economy into a tailspin towards another Great Depression. Wish to argue? Be my guest!

But I digress!

So said Koch Brothers came to the desert this past weekend, Rancho Mirage to be exact, this Resort to be specific, to hold a meeting with 200 of the wealthiest Americans and discuss how to further the tea party agenda of climate change denial, health care opposition, stopping financial regulation and most importantly trying to come up with bogus ideas to impeach President Obama. You can see their agenda in its entirety right here. As it turns out Koch Industries has held meetings in our area before, usually under the cloak of secrecy, but not this time. This time it was made loud and clear that they were here and what they were up to. And residents took action in form of a “Quarantine the Kochs” rally. The Kochs might have had the Rancho Las Palmas Resort, but we had the Hilton Rancho Mirage for discussion panels in the morning. Koch Industries had Eric Cantor and Glenn Beck, we had green energy activist Van Jones, the Courage Campaign’s Rick Jacobs, and constitutional scholar Edwin Chemerinsky. You know, sane people!!! After a morning of discussion panels the rally moved to the River Shopping Center parking lot across the street from where the Koch Brothers had found their little desert sanctuary.

There were about 1000 of us. A public assembly of concerned citizens that love this country and care about their fellow men and women. Greed can cloak ones eyes and by financing Citizens United, a group that led the Supreme Court to lift restrictions on corporate funding of political campaigns, the Koch Brothers have helped open the flood gates for unlimited campaign contributions from big companies and billionaires like themselves that can never be matched by the average citizen. And if you believe corporations care about anything but their bottom line you have not been conscious for the past decade. And am not implying that corporations and their shareholders do not count in this country. They do! After all they are constituents. What I take exception to is the fact that average Americans will no longer have a voice and this country will no longer see a middle class.

While our rally was completely peaceful, David and Charles Koch apparently found it necessary to be guarded by snipers and riot police – government funded, paid for by the taxpayer…

Gosh, it must suck to be them!

In the end 25 people were arrested on tress passing charges as they were trying to enter the resort to confront Koch Industries, and later released. Some of this seemed more symbolic than anything. Our protest however was anything but symbolic.

That means you, Judge Scalia and Judge Thomas!

A real veteran and patriot!

The nurses union joined as the Koch Brothers are also opposed to Social Security and Medicare!

Tell that to Sarah Palin!

The ever present Sheriff helicopter! You know, for the unruly masses!

And guess who else showed up at the rally! That’s right, no other than Andrew Breitbart! One could have guessed. And he is just the loudmouth you imagine him to be! He swept in on roller blades while his two “videographers” (and I am using this term loosely) had to try and follow him on foot. The non cape crusader told us all to go to Applebee’s with him. Who knew this was his favorite restaurant? He did not stick around for long. I guess he was lost as none of the signs were misspelled nor showed slurs of any kind.

You always know it is a successful rally when Mr. Big Government cannot stay away!!!

Today’s Running Tip: Rollerblading as Crosstraining!

Rollerblading is an excellent crosstraining activity for runners. As opposed to running it is low impact and each time you glide forward on one blade, you have to activate the muscles involved in balancing on one leg at an angle (hip flexors, glutes, abs), which can help with muscle imbalances caused by running, ultimately making you a stronger runner.
